"Why is Delhi in jail?" Rahul Gandhi questions restrictions ahead of Congress march

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Monday questioned the restrictions imposed in Delhi ahead of the party’s scheduled march, asking why the national capital had been turned into a “jail”.

Addressing a press conference ahead of the march, the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha alleged that people were being prevented from reaching Delhi and that train and bus services were being stopped.

“People are being stopped from reaching Delhi. Trains, buses are being stopped. Delhi has been converted into a fortress. Why is Delhi, the capital of India, in jail?” Gandhi said.

During the press conference, Gandhi played several videos purportedly showing police excesses against protesters seeking to exercise their right to dissent.

He also questioned why Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar had not resigned, amid the Opposition’s allegations concerning the Election Commission and the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.

Gandhi’s remarks came amid heightened security arrangements and the detention of Opposition leaders ahead of the planned march.
