Renewable Energy Surpasses Fossil Fuels in Global Electricity Generation
For the first time in history, renewable energy sources generated more electricity globally than fossil fuels in a single quarter. Wind, solar, hydro, and geothermal combined produced 52% of global electricity in Q1 2026, according to the IEA. Solar power led the growth with installed capacity exceeding 2 terawatts. China, the US, and India were the largest contributors.
