Delhi protest: Several lawyers, including Supreme Court AOR detained

Several lawyers, including Supreme Court advocate-on-record (AOR) Sumita Hazarika, were detained by Delhi Police near the Supreme Court on Saturday amid heightened security arrangements ahead of a protest called by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) at Jantar Mantar.

According to messages circulating among lawyers, at least four advocates, including two AORs, were picked up from near the Supreme Court and lawyers’ chambers and taken away in a police vehicle.

One of the detained advocates alleged that the police personnel had not disclosed their destination.

“Two AORs- Sumita Hazarika and myself and two other lawyers have picked up in Vajra van by police personnel two of whom have no name tags. Don’t know where they are taking us,” the message stated.

A photograph shared by advocates showed three women seated inside a police vehicle, with uniformed personnel present.

Separately, messages circulating among lawyers claimed that around 100 advocates had been detained and taken to the Yamuna Sports Complex. However, the number of lawyers detained, their whereabouts and the grounds for the police action could not be independently verified.

The reported detentions came amid heightened security in the national capital ahead of the CJP’s planned protest at Jantar Mantar against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
